Best Books on Multiple sclerosis (Diet, Yoga, Exercise)?
My fiance (27yrs M) was recently diagnosed with MS. Thank God it is in its very early stage. He will start the treatment (Rebif) in two weeks but I am also looking to learn more about MS, diets and exercise that can help my fiance fight MS.. There are a lot of books out there:
- The Multiple Sclerosis Diet Book: A Low-Fat Diet for the Treatment of M.S.
- Yoga and Multiple Sclerosis : A Journey to Health and Healing
- Exercises for Multiple Sclerosis : A Safe and Effective Program to Fight Fatigue, Build Strength, and Improve Balance
- Reversing Multiple Sclerosis
- Dietary Supplements And Multiple Sclerosis
- The MS Recovery Diet
- Living Well : 21 Days to Transform Your Life, Supercharge Your Health, and Feel Spectacular
Are you familiar with those books? Which would you highly recommend? Must-read?
Thanks!

The National MS Society has a wealth of information. Health care professionals often refer patients/family/friends to it. http://www.nationalmssociety.org/index.aspx
Include info and newsletters for kids if you have kids.
I also like the "MS for Dummies" book. For me MS was the devil I knew since my mom and aunt have it. But the book was a good reference for my husband. Plus there were tips I hadn’t heard of or thought about.
The best advice I have is to have great communication with you fiancee (what does he want need from you) and his neurologist!
Re: your book list/topics
Eat healthy: Eat a healthy diet just like everyone else, making smart choices to balance between food and activity. Ask your doctor what diet is right for you.
There is some evidence that taking an oral supplement of linoleic acid (found in evening primrose, sunflower seeds, and safflower oil) may slightly improve MS symptoms.
Don’t overheat: Whether you are exercising, working, taking a hot shower or have a fever, try not to get overheated so you won’t have a pseudoflair and get fatigued. Heat appears to intensify MS symptoms for about 60% of patients until it passes. (Personally, hot showers and work/exercise don’t bother me but any little bit of fever wipes me out.)
Decrease stress: Massage therapy helps relax and reduce stress and depression, which can exacerbate MS. Yoga, Tai Chi, meditation help too. Strive to have a positive outlook. It won’t cure MS, but it can reduce your stress and help you feel better.
Good luck with the marriage!
